T-Ball

Scarborough Little League Home

T-Ball begins the child’s experience in Scarborough’s Little League system.

Boys and girls who are 6 years old before July 31st play in T-Ball. Boys and girls who will be 7 years old before July 31st play in Single A (Coach pitch). Late birth date Kindergarten children are allowed to stay with their classmates to encourage a positive experience. The season runs from early May to late June. Typically the first week is devoted to practices, (usually two) one during a weeknight, and one on Saturday morning. Each team usually has two games scheduled each week thereafter. One game is during the week (Monday-Thursday) and begins at approximately 6:15 PM. The second weekly game is either Saturday morning or early afternoon. Game length is approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Children should have a baseball glove. Each child is furnished with a team shirt and baseball cap. Children should wear the shirt and hat to all games. Special balls and bats are provided. T-balls are rubberized and softer then traditional baseballs.

Games are three innings in length. Each child gets a turn to hit when his/her team is at bat. This means each child has three "at bats" each game. Children begin the season hitting the ball off a stationary rubberized stand called a "Tee". Some children will advance to "live" underhanded pitching by the coach as the season progresses. There is no pressure for a child to advance from the Tee. When a child’s team is in the field, all children on the team are in the field. Children take turns playing different positions.

At this level, it is expected that most children have had little or no exposure to the game of baseball or softball. Primary goals are to teach the children basic skills and knowledge of the game.

All coaches have received an orientation that stresses three basic premises:

  • T-Ball means FUN for each child.
  • Each child should learn RESPECT of the game, which means respect of other team players, teammates, and coaches.
  • Children LEARN about the game.

Everyone wins, has fun and no score is ever kept.
