Boys AAA Baseball

Scarborough Little League Home

Boys AAA Baseball is a competitive, instructional level of baseball. Therefore, the rules are structured in such a way to encourage and develop the skills of the boys, score is kept, and league standings are tracked. Above all else during our season our goal should be to have fun, encourage our children and assist in skill development.

Games are 6 innings in length with a 2-hour time limit. There are 3 outs per team per inning. There is a 5 run limit per inning for each team on offense regardless of how many outs are against them. The 5 run limit will not apply beyond the 5th inning as teams are vying for the win (subject to darkness and/or the 2-hr. time limit).

The first 3 innings, teams will hit from the pitching machine. There are no walks from the pitching machine. If hit by a pitching machine pitch, the player will stay in the box and resume his at bat. Third strikes will be called. Batted balls hitting the pitching machine will be called dead balls, runners will not advance and the batter will resume his at bat taking the pitch over.

All innings after the third will be live pitching with all rules applying to walks and called third strikes. Players pitching can pitch no more than two innings per day, must rest two days before pitching again, and can pitch no more than 4 innings per week.

12 year olds remaining in AAA can only pitch by agreement of the coaches and the plate umpire in charge at the game. When in doubt, safety should prevail as the league also has 9, 10 & 11 year olds.

The Defensive team will field 10 Players (4 Outfielders). No short fielders or rovers are allowed. The pitcher will play either side of the pitching machine during the first 3 innings. Multiple substitutions are allowed at any time.

Every player will hit whether he is in the field or not. No stolen bases are allowed. No player should sit more than 1 inning at a time. Defensive field assignments should be rotated every 2 innings and players should be exposed to skill appropriate positions.

Umpires are needed for home plate and first base. Umpires will be allowed to "coach " players during the game to assist in teaching fundamental skills (an excellent opportunity to assist our efforts).

Children are not allowed to operate the pitching machine. The wheel is moving at speeds up to 60 mph and small fingers can easily be injured. Coaches will ensure enforcement of this important rule.

For safety, Little League rules do not allow the on-deck batter to take practice swings or use the on deck area. Encourage practice swings when setting up at the plate.

AAA will require a practice each week in addition to the two scheduled games. This is a skill development issue and full participation is expected of all participants.

AAA is a competitive league and as such scores and league standings are kept. The winning team is responsible for reporting results to league VP. AAA will have a playoff involving all teams in the league playing for the Scarborough AAA Championship.

AAA will support a competitive all-star team at season’s end. Teams to be voted by fellow athletes and balanced by the League VP and coaches following the All Star rules developed by the Board of Directors and used at the Little League level. All-star play will occur during July.

Emergency Contact/Medical Release Forms must be filled out prior to the 1st game. No child can participate in games unless this form is completed and turned into the team manager. Managers must keep the Emergency Contact Forms with them at all practice and game events.

Rainouts must be re-scheduled through the league VP. Do not contact Community Services to schedule Little League events.
