"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything.
It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good and just and beautiful."
~PLATO~

Scarborough 's music program offers students:
•  musical and band instruction.
•  a creative outlet.
•  the opportunity to cultivate band member skills.
•  musical experiences, which may provide a springboard for future careers.

Scarborough 's rich and varied music program begins in kindergarten and culminates with the high school performing artsprograms. Band instruction is introduced in the 5 th grade. With approximately 800 students involved with the Grades 5-12 band program, Scarborough 's strong band booster group is vital.

Scarborough High School 's musicians engage in a challenging band program. The Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble perform under the sole direction of Mrs. Renee Richardson, Scarborough 's high school band teacher. All band musicians perform formal concerts several times a year, and small group ensembles play at special school gatherings. Additionally, the high school offers extracurricular opportunities with several jazz ensembles, the chorale arts, and theater productions.

Many of Scarborough's band students audition and perform in local competitions including All State Band in the classical, jazz, and chorus categories, Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, Bay Chamber Next Generation Concert, and Southern Maine Honors Concert Band to name a few. Scarborough's young musicians have also benefited from involvement with the Southern Maine Music Academy (At USM), the summer music camp at the University of Maine in Orono, and the Portland Conservatory of Music.
