TogetherGreen Surveys of the Marsh
Volunteers Needed!
Phrag Surveys
Volunteers are needed to help survey select areas of Scarborough Marsh for the invasive reed, Phragmites australis. Volunteers will find, measure, and map Phragmites using handheld GPS units. The resulting data will be entered into a GIS database. No experience is necessary to volunteer.
A training session will be held on Saturday, July 10 (2 pm - 4 pm) where you will learn about Phragmites, how to use GPS units and surveying techniques. The training will be held at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center with time spent out in the field. The survey date Sunday, July 18 (10 am - 2 pm).
To register for the training and survey all the nature center (207) 883-5100 or
e-mail smac@maineaudubon.org.
If you can not make the training or surveying date, alternative dates may be a possibility. Please call Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center for more information.
Bird Surveys
Want to do some birding at Maine's premier birding spot and help gather data on Maine's first Important Bird Area ? Join us on July 17 (8 a.m. - 11 a.m.) and August 14 (7 a.m.-10 a.m.) at Scarborough Marsh for a marsh-wide survey of birds to document the numbers of individuals and species. Timed to catch the beginning of shorebird migration, each group of monitors will be assigned a portion of the marsh to survey. Depending on the assignment, surveys may be done on foot, by car or from a canoe (provided by the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center or bring your own). Beginning birders welcome! They will go out with experienced monitors.
The morning will start with a brief introduction to the marsh and the survey methods, including a presentation on "Bird Counting 101". After that, monitors will disburse to their assigned sections, and actual surveys may last up to several hours (depending on location surveyed).
