There Ought To Be A Law

a film by Anita Clearfield, Shoshana Hoose, and Geoffrey Leighton

In 2004 Cathy Crowley's 18-year-old son took his own life with a shotgun he purchased from a Wal-Mart the weekend of his death. There Ought To Be A Law chronicles Cathy Crowley's crusade to get a gun law passed in the Maine Legislature after her son's death. This compact and restrained documentary is a refreshing take on the theme of the average citizen versus the government.

PAST PROGRAMS 2007-2008

Cultivating Community:  A Four Course Food-for-Thought Series on Scarborough’s Edible Past, Present and Future

A Multimedia Buffet to be held in the Library Meeting Room

Presented by Roger Doiron

Part 1: Are We Going to Scarborough Fare? Or put another way “Are we heading towards a vibrant local foods system in Scarborough?” The reasons for moving towards more locally-sourced foods are numerous. We will be exploring these reasons – health, culinary, environmental, community, economic  - in depth over the course of our four part series.  In part one of our series, we will frame the discussion by looking at briefly at the town’s agricultural and maritime past, where we are now, and ahead at some of the forces that require that we rethink the way we eat.   Roger Doiron will set the stage for the series with an entertaining and provocative multimedia look at food.

Thursday, January 24, 2008 ♥ 6:30PM

Part 2:Protecting Our Food Resource Base at Land and Sea Without farmland protection and stewardship of the town’s natural resources, there can be no local sweetcorn, clams or lobsters. In this session, we look at Scarborough’s existing food resource base at land and at sea, the pressures it faces, and what might be done to protect and enhance the resource base in the future.

Thursday, February 28. 2008 ♥  6:30 PM

Part 3:   Growing Healthy Children, Schools and Neighborhoods: Connecting the dots between food, health, community and the environment Maine is at the back of the class in the Northeast when it comes to child obesity rates.  Many experts believe that America’s obesity epidemic is related to a lack of food literacy.  Too few people know where their food comes from and what’s in it.  Efforts are under way in the US, Maine, and in our own town to help close the food literacy gap.  Together, we will look at what’s being done and what might be done to help more of the town’s children to connect with origins of healthy eating.

Thursday, March 27. 2008 ♥ 6:30 PM

Part 4:Living La Vida Local: Practical steps and ideas for getting Scarborough Fare In this last part of our series, we look at practical steps that individuals, families, groups, and businesses can make to help bring the delicious revolution to Scarborough.  We will draw conclusions from the first three sessions and develop a list of some specific actions that can be taken by different people and groups.
