Scarborough is located on the coast of Maine six miles south of Portland.  As a pleasant commuter town with its own vibrant business community and shopping areas, we cater equally well to the needs of summer visitors.

Whether for a weekend getaway or summer vacation, we offer a choice of romantic inns, motels, campgrounds and a variety of restaurants.

Besides many fine places to walk and explore, recreational amenities include golf, tennis, bowling, kayaking, short track speedway and indoor carting.

Among Scarborough's most beautiful features is the scenic 3,100-acre Scarborough Marsh.  The salt marsh is crossed by meandering tidal rivers and streams and is a habitat for a broad array of wildlife and birds.  The marsh estuary opens to a coastline flanked by miles of sandy beaches from Pine Point to the South, Ferry Beach, Prouts Neck, Scarborough Beach and the quiet coastal community of Higgins Beach to the North.

With a population of 17,000, Scarborough is Maine's second fastest growing community.

Small Business Week

Small Business Week in Scarborough April 2 - April 26, 2008

The Scarborough Town Council passed a resolution naming the week of April 29-May 5 Scarborough Small Business Week, thus kicking off our celebration of the diversity of small businesses in our community. The Scarborough Public Library and the Scarborough Community Chamber partnered to provide businesses, especially those without a physical presence in the community with a highly visible location to promote themselves. Several networking opportunities encouraged participants to share their knowledge and learn from each other. Many business to business connections were made!

24 businesses were represented in an eye-catching display in the center of the Library. Participants ranged from established businesses to brand new ones. Some were single person consulting firms working from home, some have high traffic locations with an established customer base. Cats to kids, Candy to flowers, karting to hot tubs, workouts to chiropractic, embroidery to photography- the range of services and products is impressive!

We started the week with a great reception at the Library, catered by Gary McCourt of Hannaford Supermarkets. 50 people enjoyed good company and superb food. Thank you, Gary, and we will be sure to stop by your chef station at Hannaford to say hello and sample your fine cuisine!

We learned a lot at two Lunch and Learn programs at the Library. Jim Milliken, a consultant whose expertise includes marketing and advertising, provided tips on organizing and presenting your business message to the right audience. Frank Kimball, of the Maine Bureau of Insurance, offered tips on insurance coverage every business should consider and answered questions from the participants. Thank you, Jim and Frank, for giving us ideas to manage our businesses more effectively!

And finally, thank you to Nancy Crowell, Library Director and SCC Board member, and her team for putting together this celebration that only gets better each year!

Career Expo held for sophomores

Press Release March 19, 2007

Careers took center stage for sophomores at Scarborough High School last week. Fifty-two different local presenters spoke to students about their careers which ranged from physical therapist to performing arts, with nurses, lawyers, entrepreneurs, law enforcement and game warden in between - just to name a few. Twelve facilitators from Scarborough’s Community Chamber, the organizers of the career expo, worked closely with the High School principal and guidance department to give students a good introduction to the working world.

The Career Expo is one of the most successful Scarborough Community Chamber events attracting the widest participation level of its local business members. Students see familiar faces from the community come in and explain their jobs in detail. Small panels were divided by career clusters and presented to students who visited each cluster on a rotation.

For the presenters, it was an opportunity to look back at these young adults and tell them the story of how they chose their career, and what personality, skills, and education was necessary for a particular line of work. It was also a way to give back to the community. The collaborative between Scarborough Community Chamber and the high school began four years ago when members of the Scarborough Community Chamber board of directors sent out a survey to chamber members asking: How could the Chamber add value to the community? The overwhelming response was to reach out to high school students by providing an opportunity to explore careers.

It just so happened that the new MEA requirement was out, and the high school faced the challenge of developing a career exploration program. Working together, the high school and the chamber took a year to develop the career program. In addition to the career expo, local businesses present regularly to the career exploration class, which also exposes students to work-study programs, job shadowing, mentoring, and internship opportunities
